Integrated Reservoir Diagenesis (Part of RWTH/WIHO Tight Gas Initiative)


The economic development of „tight gas“ reserves (low permeability natural gas reserves) plays an increasing role. The reserves potential of tight gas reservoirs is very large. The reason for the low permeability of these reserves is manifold and controlled by a large number of parameters and processes, mostly of sedimentary and structural origin. Depositional controls of the sedimentary reservoirs, burial history and associated diagenetic changes play the main role in the protracted development of the reservoirs. The role of authigenic clay minerals for example is one of the main reasons for the low permeabilities encountered.

Aim of this project is to characterise the temporal and spatial diagenetic evolution of a tight gas field as well as to assess the impact of the structural/microstructural evolution on diagenesis and permeability properties. This includes derivation of a P-T-t-x evolution of mineral and fluid phases and test of geochemical and quantitative mineralogical tools for a fast and effective characterization of the diagenetic history of a field. The effect of existing mineralogical parameters on modelling results and identification of mineralogical parameters and processes which need further attention with respect to modelling work will be evaluated.
